Our service projects have included preschool classes for hard-of-hearing children, shut-in library service and Meals-on-Wheels in the past.
Currently, our efforts are directed mainly toward several local projects, and Zonta’s International projects.
Locally, our current projects include:
Bayers-Westwood Family Resource Centre:
We support the women who make use of the centre by providing services (beauty treatments, computer system installation, etc.); goods (clothing, furniture, dry goods for their “Collective Kitchen”, etc.); and financial assistance (travel expenses, tuition fees, etc.).
The Marguerite Centre:
We support The Marguerite Centre, a long-term facility providing a residential holistic program for women recovering from addictions and abuse. This 12-bed facility is the only one of its kind for women in the Maritime Provinces.
Coverdale Courtwork Society
Coverdale Courtwork Society is a service for women and girls involved in the criminal justice system. It is an established not-for-profit organization that has been providing programs and support services in our community for more than 30 years. The focus on on court support, vital programming, counselling and education.
Halifax Northend Parent Resource
North End Parent Resource Centre offers safe place to meet community members; a supportive environment for personal growth and development as well as many programs and activities that are planned and organized together with the community and staff. These programs empower families to meet their life goals and overcome the challenges of living with poverty and the pressures of living in a marginalized community.
Zonta International Projects
Every year, the Zonta Club of Halifax’s budget includes donations to Zonta International to the following: The Young Women in Public Affairs Award, The Jane M. Klausman Scholarship, The Amelia Earhart Fellowship and International Service.
Every two years, Zonta International sponsors international programs in association with United Nations agencies that are working to empower women. Our next Zonta International Convention was scheduled to be held in Chicago, IL, the location of Zonta International headquarters, July 4 – 8, 2020, however, because of Convid-19, it was cancelled. Zonta International will held a virtual meeting in July so that all Clubs could vote on the programs for the coming biennium.
Most of these programs are in developing nations and are selected by the Zonta International Board and approved by Zonta International membership. To learn more about the International Service Projects, visit the Zonta International Web Site.
